Mortensen & Milne is a powerhouse personal injury law firm. With over 100 years of combined litigation experience, the attorneys at our firm understand and are capable of working on the most complex cases. With several multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements, you get next level performance with Mortensen & Milne.

Alan Mortensen and Lance Milne founded Mortensen & Milne in 2023 after working together for 12 years. They have successfully established a firm built on professionalism, integrity, inclusivity, and compassion. They pride themselves on developing and maintaining quality relationships with their coworkers and clients. Together with Chris Cheney and Josh Ostler, their team displays discipline, dedication and adaptability. A few of their reputable cases include the largest wrongful death verdict in the State of Utah, Mahe v. Century Blinds, for $25,000,000, the Asiana Air Disaster at San Francisco, The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ United Effort Plan Trust, The Elko, Nevada bus tragedy and the Guatemalan Air disaster. These cases have resulted in groundbreaking settlements both inside and out of Utah as well as in the Utah Supreme Court. Despite their many successes, they continue to value and have created a workplace environment that is inviting to all.

Alan Mortensen is one of the most active trial lawyers and has been the lead attorney on numerous cases - including aviation and truck accidents as well as insurance bad faith claims - that have been closely followed throughout the nation as well as in Utah. Mr. Mortensen is active in many professional organizations including ABOTA and Litigation Counsel of America. Alan is a past President of the Utah Association for Justice, and a member of the American Association for Justice, Mountain States Super Lawyers and Utah’s Legal Elite. He is a member of the Utah State Bar and the Salt Lake County Bar Associations, as well as the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association. He is also sought periodically for interviews in the national media regarding his legal expertise. Alan has no fear when it comes to the Goliaths in a case. He fights for the underdog and can see every case from a unique perspective.

Lance Milne is also a very active trial lawyer, who has successfully resolved numerous claims and lawsuits through voluntary settlements, alternative dispute resolution and jury trials. He is a member of the Multi-Million Dollar and Million Dollar Advocates Forums, a Mountain States Super Lawyer and one of Utah’s Legal Elite. He credits his effectiveness to prior work in the insurance defense industry, which he explains allowed him to see how potential parties on either side of a case would approach the complex litigation process. Mr. Milne’s expertise has been especially focused on trucking accidents and the oil and gas industries, but is not limited to that, as he has extensive experience and success with motor vehicle accidents, defective products, catastrophic burn and brain injuries, insurance bad faith and medical malpractice cases.

Chris Cheney first gained a passion for helping injury victims during law school while serving as a law clerk to Mr. Mortensen and Mr. Milne. Because of this experience, Chris was able to witness firsthand the life-changing empowerment and relief that excellent legal work could bring to grieving clients and their families. After graduating law school, Chris spent several years at a firm specializing in interstate trucking law and complex business litigation. During these years, Chris primarily represented and advised trucking companies, freight brokers, and shippers on issues of interstate commerce, contracts, and freight claims. However, Chris’ desire to help injury victims never faded, and his career came full circle when he returned to work with Mr. Mortensen and Mr. Milne. Chris is now able to do what he loves every day, which is helping provide his clients with that same feeling of relief and empowerment he witnessed those many years ago. He represents the families of school shooting victims and the victims of sexual and physical abuse at troubled-youth treatment centers as well as product liability and various personal injury cases. He is a member of the Mountain States Super Lawyers and one of Utah’s Legal Elite.

Joshua Ostler has helped clients obtain favorable results against big banks, multi-million-dollar corporations, insurance companies, and State & Federal governments. Josh’s years in complex litigation have also come with extensive appellate law experience, beginning with his time as a judicial extern for the Honorable Michelle Christiansen Forster on the Utah Court of Appeals. Over the years, Josh has briefed and argued successful appeals in both State and Federal courts. For his efforts, Josh has previously been named as one of Utah Business Magazine’s Legal Elite, and a Mountain States Super Lawyers Rising Star.

Whether it is a personal injury, car or trucking accident, product liability, wrongful death, catastrophic brain injury, aviation disaster or medical malpractice, the attorneys at Mortensen & Milne can be trusted to maximize the recovery in your case. We are not a run of the mill law firm. You will receive customized care for your individual case whether you live out of state or close to our home base in Salt Lake City, Utah. You can rest assured we are here for you!
