Few law firms can match the track record of personal injury powerhouse Block O'Toole & Murphy (BOM). The firm continues its remarkable run, achieving noteworthy results for its injured clients. BOM has been a household name in New York’s courthouses and a mainstay in the New York Law Journal's annual Top Verdicts and Settlements report. For the past 12 consecutive years, BOM has obtained the most settlements exceeding $1 million of any firm in the entire State of New York according to the NYLJ. When the NYLJ list expanded its 2020 rankings—which were previously limited to New York cases—to include results from across the Northeast, BOM had the best reported results in the entire Northeast.
“Our firm has always taken pride in our dedication to the folks we represent,” says firm founder Jeffrey Block. “Every client and every case matters. It is and always has been the hallmark of the firm.”
Among its 2020 results, which saw another year with well over $130 million in settlements, BOM secured a $15 million settlement in a wrongful death case for the family of a 38-year-old HVAC technician who died in a job-related accident. The firm also obtained a $10.5 million settlement in a wrongful death case in which a 50-year-old union laborer who was working on a water main installation project in Staten Island died after the defective saw he was equipped with suddenly kicked back, striking him in the neck.
“We saw new challenges in 2020, for sure, but our approach has always been consistent,” says partner Daniel O’Toole. “We work hard, we work together and we aren’t afraid to think outside the box.”
In 2021, BOM has continued to achieve stellar results, such as a $6 million settlement for a 49-year-old union operating engineer who was injured while operating a crane on a Manhattan construction site.
“What’s notable about our firm—and has ultimately allowed us to achieve these results—is the collaborative nature of our practice,” says partner Stephen Murphy, who was named as Best Lawyers® 2022 “Lawyer of the Year” for Personal Injury Litigation – Plaintiffs in New York City. “Individual talent can win a case, but talent plus teamwork leads to long-term success for a firm like ours.”
