The Best Lawyers in Australia Awards

The Best Lawyers in Australia™ 2024 launch ushers in the first awards of the season for 2024, honoring the talent of lawyers across Australia for an exciting 16th year.

A culmination of nominations, outreach, voting and research each year produce these esteemed awards, honoring lawyers and their professional excellence through our Purely Peer Review® methodology. For the second year, we are also recognizing lawyers at earlier stages in their careers with the prestigious Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Australia™ awards.

The 16th edition of The Best Lawyers in Australia for 2024 highlights 4,472 recognized lawyers across nine metropolitan areas. Among the top metros with the most recognized lawyers is Sydney.

The Best Lawyers in Australia awards include 95 practice areas. The 10 practices with the most honorees include Litigation, Insurance Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Corporate Law, Construction/Infrastructure Law, Real Property Law, Commercial Law, Mergers and Acquisitions Law, Insolvency and Reorganization Law and Government Practice.

Those seeking legal counsel in Australia visited the Best Lawyers website searching for lawyers across several practices. The most frequently searched practice areas include Insurance Law, Litigation, Labor and Employment Law, Immigration Law, Real Property Law, Family Law, Intellectual Property Law, Tax Law, Construction/Infrastructure Law and Planning and Environmental Law.

“Lawyer of the Year” Awards

Also included in this year’s awards are the revered “Lawyer of the Year” awards, which distinguish one lawyer per practice area in each metropolitan area. For 2024, we awarded 305 lawyers as “Lawyer of the Year” across Australia.

Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Australia

In 2020, Best Lawyers expanded our awards to include lawyers who are earlier in their practices and have been in private practice for less than 10 years. With the same methodology used for The Best Lawyers in Australia, our Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Australia awards use an advanced process of nominations, peer voting and careful evaluation of results to highlight the top legal talent in the industry among newer lawyers. For the 2nd edition of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Australia, we recognize 525 lawyers in 48 practice areas. Lawyers are awarded in 102 firms across six metropolitan areas.

“Law Firm of the Year” Awards

“Law Firm of the Year” awards recognize a single top firm for its work in a specific legal practice area nationwide. Awards are determined based on a handful of factors, including lawyer feedback, the number of lawyers included in Best Lawyers for that firm and practice area, the number of office locations a firm has, historical analysis of the firm’s “Lawyer of the Year” awards, materials submitted by firms and the firm’s overall scope and areas of expertise.
