Thompson Bowie & Hatch LLC
3 The Best Lawyers in America® awards
Thompson Bowie & Hatch LLC traces its roots to a three-person insurance defense firm started in 1978. Today it is a mid-sized law firm providing a wide range of litigation-oriented services throughout Northern New England. For almost four decades, we have helped shape the law in Maine. For example, our attorneys helped define both the nature and the burden of proof for punitive damages. We helped establish the limits on emotional distress recovery in claims against attorneys. Our attorneys also outlined the parameters of when liability may be imposed upon franchisors for the acts of their franchisees. We have reinforced the narrow contours of the Maine Tort Claims Act’s immunity provisions, limiting the liability of governmental entities. Our influence stretches beyond Maine, to and throughout Northern New England. In New Hampshire, our attorneys worked to establish the continuing duty to warn of a product defect. With our place on the cutting edge of a wide range of legal issues, we continue to be a prominent force in the development of the law in Maine and throughout Northern New England.
Areas of practice: Our clients benefit from the attorneys at Thompson Bowie & Hatch LLC’s decades of experience in several diverse and distinct areas of the law across New England. No matter the issue, our attorneys stand ready to use that know-how to achieve effective and creative legal solutions that provide positive results for our clients.
Thompson Bowie & Hatch LLC handles a wide range of diverse cases and disputes. We also provide assistance in negotiating contracts and in the identification of risk, so as to assist clients in both managing and avoiding risk. We are regularly involved in complex multi-party litigation. Our attorneys are experienced in professional liability, products liability, insurance, construction and transportation litigation, maritime and admiralty law, as well as the representation of municipalities and law enforcement personnel in administrative and civil rights litigation. We also have extensive experience in more traditional tort litigation, such as premises liability, personal injury and automobile litigation. As the firm has grown, we have represented a diverse range of clients, ranging from individuals to small businesses to insurance carriers, large institutional clients and multi-national corporations. Our practice has evolved from being focused solely on litigation to assisting clients in structuring transactions and evaluating projects so as to minimize and manage problems when they do arise.
