Called to the Bar in 1972, Alfred has over five decades worth of experience in the field of family law and family law litigation, mediation, and arbitration. A long-time lecturer and author, Alfred is well-respected in his field, evidenced by a number of professional awards that he has received including: The Ontario Bar Association Annual Award for Excellence in Family Law, the Advocates’ Society tribute dinner in recognition of an advocates’ dedication to the highest ideals of the legal profession, and the Law Society Medal for significant contribution to the profession, A fellow of both the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Alfred served as an instructor, senior instructor, and associate head of the family law section of the Bar admissions course. Certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in family law every year since 1991, he is designated as a leading practitioner of family law by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and over the last decade is featured in the Best Lawyers in Canada directory. Alfred is a well-published expert; with his work appearing in such highly regarded family law publications as Family Law Quarterly and Child Custody Law and Practice. He is also author of Carswell's Annual Review of Family Law and the past editor of Matrimonial Property Law in Canada. He is frequently called upon as a speaker or lecturer at various family law conferences, including those administered by the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the National Judicial Institute, the Ontario Conference of Judges, the Federation of Law Societies, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, and the Ontario Advocates Society. Alfred is also a recognized expert in the field of Family Law process reform and has acted as an advisor to the Ontario Attorney General on family law matters. He is the lead author of a report commissioned by the Attorney General of Ontario on the Family Law Courts entitled Recapturing and Renewing the Vision of the Family Court , which report has formed the basis of much of the changes in the Family Court system in Ontario over the last five years. For 17 years, Alfred was a member of the Province of Ontario's Family Law Rules Committee as a designate of the Chief Justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. With a lifelong interest in the arts, Alfred especially enjoys the visual arts and has an eclectic taste in music. He is a physical exercise and sports enthusiast , having coached children’s soccer for many years. Most of all, he loves to hang out with his two grand children George and Grace as well as his children Christopher and Alexandra, and their partners Selina and Tom, all of whom have chosen to enter the legal profession.
