Andrew D. Shapiro

Andy Shapiro concentrates his practice in complex commercial litigation and arbitration with an emphasis on reinsurance, antitrust and class action disputes.

Andy is a partner at Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd and a member of the firm’s Management Committee.

Andy is a litigator and trial attorney who crafts creative strategies to help clients navigate complicated business disputes. With nearly 20 years of experience, Andy excels at utilizing motion practice and pre-trial discovery to position his cases for favorable resolutions. Since 2010, Andy has taught Pre-Trial Advocacy (a course he co-created) as an Adjunct Professor at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. When a case cannot be resolved before trial, Andy stands ready to try the case, having tried numerous cases before judges, juries, and arbitrators throughout the country.

Andy’s experience extends to representing corporations, partnerships, and individuals in a wide range of commercial disputes before trial and appellate courts, administrative agencies, and arbitration panels. He has litigated multi-million (and billion) dollar insurance and reinsurance disputes on behalf of insurers, cedents, and reinsurers and represented plaintiffs and defendants in cases involving claims of antitrust price fixing and monopolization, breach of contract, breach of non-compete agreements, employment discrimination, statutory, common law, and consumer fraud, copyright infringement, and breach of fiduciary duty.

As a member of Butler Rubin’s Management Committee, Andy is responsible for the firm’s operations, a skill he brings to bear when counseling his clients with respect to legal decisions that have significant implications on their businesses.

Andy was named as an Illinois “Super Lawyer” in Business Litigation and an Illinois “Leading Lawyer” in Commercial Litigation, Insurance Coverage & Reinsurance Law. And, he was named a leader in Antitrust Law and Insurance Law in The Best Lawyers in America (2019). Andy also received a peer review rating of AV Preeminent™ from Martindale-Hubbell.

Andy served on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (2009 – 2016). He also served on the Board of Directors for the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (2013 – 2015) and was selected and served on the Superintendent’s Citizen Finance and Facilities Committee for North Shore School District 112 (2012 – 2014).

Andy is a graduate of Miami University (B.S. Finance) and received his law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law where he served as associate editor of The Elder Law Journal and was a member of the National Moot Court Team. Andy joined Butler Rubin in 2006 after beginning his career at Winston & Strawn.
