Construction Law
Ted Vick focuses his law practice on counseling, advising and representing clients in the construction industry. Over the last 22 years, Ted has advised and represented numerous regional and national owners and developers, general contractors, construction managers, and architectural and engineering firms in connection with construction projects located throughout the Southeastern United States and in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Texas, California and Washington. Ted regularly represents owners, developers and contractors in the resolution of design and construction-related disputes, whether through settlement negotiations, mediation, arbitration or litigation in trial or appellate courts. Ted has represented clients in all types of design and construction-related disputes, including delay, interference and acceleration claims, claims for extra work and changes, claims arising out of termination, supplementation or abandonment, and claims for defective construction and design.
Although Ted spends much of his time representing construction industry clients in mediations, arbitrations and the courts, he dedicates even more of his time to counseling owners, developers, contractors and design professionals in the day-to-day navigation of legal issues that arise before, during and after the construction of a project, as well as negotiating and drafting critical contract documents for his clients. On the transactional side of his practice, Ted has many years of experience drafting, revising and negotiating design contracts, construction contracts, design-build contracts, CMAA and CMAR agreements, subcontracts, consulting agreements, development agreements and various other agreements and documents for the development, design and construction of multi-family residential, hospitality, commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects across the country. Ted values the relationships he has with many of his clients which span day-to-day counseling and problem solving, contract and pre-contract services, and the resolution of disputes arising out of construction projects. In his experience, when Ted is able to build this type of relationship with an industry client, he is better able to assist such clients to avoid or minimize substantial and expensive litigation.
Ted earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1992, and then worked for three years in the criminal justice field before returning to school to study law. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1998. Ted’s preparations to practice law in the construction industry began in law school, where he was fortunate to study construction law and alternative dispute resolution under preeminent leaders and scholars in those fields. While in law school, Ted was also honored to serve as Associate Editor of the Kentucky Law Journal. Upon graduation from UK Law, Ted immediately began practicing law in the Atlanta office of a well-known national law firm as a member of the firm’s Construction Practice Group. After 5 years practicing in Atlanta, Ted and his wife moved home to Greenville, South Carolina, to be closer to family. From 2003 to 2013, Ted practiced law in the Construction Practice Group of one of the largest law firms in South Carolina. In 2013, Ted joined Ward at Harper Lambert, P.A., to further his dedication to providing excellent legal services to clients in the construction industry.
Ted is a member of the South Carolina Bar and the State Bar of Georgia, and is admitted to practice in all state courts of South Carolina and Georgia, as well as the United States District Courts for the District of South Carolina and the Northern District of Georgia. Ted has represented clients in mediations, arbitrations and trial and appellate court proceedings in several other jurisdictions in accordance with the applicable rules and laws of such jurisdictions, and often in association with local counsel licensed in such jurisdictions, when appropriate. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Forum on the Construction Industry where he served for several years on the Steering Committee for Division 7 (Insurance, Surety and Liens). Ted is also a member of the South Carolina Bar’s Construction Law Section, where he served as Chair of the Construction Law Section, as well as in other officer roles. Ted is co-editor and co-author of the South Carolina Construction Law Deskbook, published in 2013 by the South Carolina Bar, and he has spoken on construction law topics and issues as an instructor at several seminars.
Ted and his wife live in Greenville with their three children. Ted enjoys spending time with his family, particularly attending the various sporting events of his son and daughters and spending time outdoors in the mountains of the Carolinas and Georgia. Ted is also an avid fan of college football.
