He has broad trial experience defending clients faced with serious and complex charges, including homicides, criminal organization offences, conspiracies, kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, firearms offences, and money laundering.

Daniel has extensive experience as criminal appellate counsel, having represented clients at the Supreme Court of Canada in more than twenty cases. He conducts criminal appeals regularly at the Alberta Court of Appeal and British Columbia Court of Appeal, and both courts have previously appointed him as amicus curiae (counsel to the court).

In addition to private citizens, Daniel has represented police officers, not-for-profit organizations, and multinational corporations. Some notable cases in which he has acted as counsel include:

  • The Coutts border blockade conspiracy to murder RCMP officers in Alberta
  • British Columbia’s worst gangland massacre (the “Surrey Six”)
  • The United Nations murder and conspiracy prosecution
  • British Columbia’s 16-year civil forfeiture action against the properties of an alleged outlaw motorcycle club
  • The largest money laundering investigation in British Columbia’s history

Daniel initially pursued a degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Toronto before completing a degree in English Literature at the University of British Columbia. He then obtained his law degree from the University of British Columbia in 2006.

Daniel is an adjunct professor at UBC’s Peter A. Allard School of Law teaching “Legal Rights Under the Charter.” He also routinely contributes to the legal community by authoring papers and speaking at continuing legal education conferences for lawyers, police officers, and judges.

He is an advocacy advisor for the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute, a board director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, a member of the Legal Aid of Alberta Appeals Committee, and a supervising lawyer for the UBC Innocence Project.

Daniel was appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in 2022.
