Maddy’s practice involves representing plaintiffs in class actions involving institutional abuse, environmental issues, pharmaceutical and product liability, Crown liability, privacy breaches, and a variety of other systemic issues.
Maddy has a law degree from the Schulich School of Law (2010) and a Master of Law from Cambridge University (2014). She is a recipient of the Right Honourable Paul Martin Sr. Scholarship and was recognized by Cambridge University for her academic achievements in her graduate work.
Maddy is a past board member of Devour! The Food Film Fest and Alice House, an organization providing second-stage housing and counselling for women leaving domestic violence.
Maddy is the recipient of the 2021 Women in Law Award for the category of Canadian personal injury lawyer, awarded by Lawyer Monthly Magazine. Maddy was named a Litigator to Watch in the field of class actions by the 2022 Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory and was named as a 2021 Lexpert® Rising Star, celebrating Canada’s leading lawyers under 40.
Most recently Maddy has acted as counsel to:
- members of the Canadian Armed Forces and employees of the Department of Defence in a class action against the government of Canada relating to sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces, resulting in a settlement that applies a restorative approach, delivers policy changes and provides compensation up to $900 million;
- individuals with Wright Profemur hip implants that prematurely fractured and required surgery in a class action against the manufacturer, resulting in a settlement up to $8.25 million;
- individuals who consumed the diabetes medication Avandia and suffered adverse cardiovascular events in a class action against the manufacturer, resulting in a settlement up to $6.75 million;
- former students of the Halifax and Amherst Schools for the deaf and hard of hearing who allege historic and systemic physical, mental and sexual abuse in a certified class action against the Province of Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority;
- residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland & Labrador who incurred property damage and loss of property values arising from flooding of the Churchill River in 2017 in a certified class action against the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nalcor Energy;
- individuals whose personal health information was breached in two separate class actions against the Nova Scotia Capital District Health Authority and Southwest District Health Authority, resulting in settlements of $400,000 and $1 million, respectively;
- patients of the colposcopy clinic at the Miramichi Regional Hospital who were exposed to a risk of infection at the clinic in a class action that resulted in a settlement of $1.275 million;
- patients of the Miramichi Regional Hospital in a class action arising from widespread pathology errors, resulting in a settlement of $2.5 million.
