Marshall is a founding partner of NGE and strategic advisor for diverse clients with substantial business and personal interests worldwide. He manages a broad range of complex transactions and strategies for corporate and individual clients, including mergers and acquisitions, estate planning, federal, state and international tax controversies and venture capital transactions.
A significant portion of Marshall’s practice is devoted to developing estate planning and business strategies for families where he is trusted with his clients’ most sensitive matters. He advises many of the wealthiest United States and international families on sophisticated wealth preservation issues, succession planning, multigenerational transfers, premarital planning, family office and private trust company matters. Marshall also has been involved in the acquisition and disposition of major art collections and has structured and implemented significant gifts and endowments to prominent universities, medical schools and other charitable organizations.
Marshall is also highly regarded for his business acumen. He serves as a member of the board of directors for Sally Beauty Holdings (NYSE) and many private companies. He frequently serves as trustee for many families. Marshall has been named one of The Best Lawyers in America by his peers for 30 years. Marshall has been a speaker at the University of Chicago Tax Conference and received the American Jewish Committee’s Judge Learned Hand Award, recognizing his outstanding leadership in the legal profession and the community. In 2019 he became the recipient of the prestigious Jerold S. Solovy Torch of Learning Award.
Marshall received his J.D. with honors, from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1971, where he served as a Notes and Comments Editor of the Law Review and was admitted to the Order of the Coif. While attending law school, he also served as a research assistant to several law professors and was an Income Tax Instructor in the accounting department. He received an M.A.S. degree in 1968 from the University of Illinois, where he served as a teaching assistant in accounting and was a research assistant in the Department for Research on Exceptional Children. He received his B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1967, was admitted to Beta Alpha Psi and became a Certified Public Accountant.
