Appellate Practice
Michael Huston counsels clients in high-stakes litigation matters, with a particular focus on crafting winning appellate strategies. He is also sought after for his deep knowledge of administrative law.
Michael’s representations are informed by his experience in the Office of the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), where he represented the federal government before the Supreme Court of the United States. As an Assistant to the Solicitor General, Michael argued nine cases before the Supreme Court and briefed hundreds more. The overwhelming majority of Michael’s cases resulted in a successful disposition. Among many other victories, he was the principal drafter of seven successful petitions for a writ of certiorari, and he prepared dozens of successful merits-stage, amicus curiae, and emergency-docket briefs. He also advised the Solicitor General on all aspects of federal litigation strategy.
Michael regularly assists clients in sensitive, bet-the-company matters. A former law clerk to the Chief Justice of the United States, John G. Roberts, Michael presents his clients’ cases through written briefs and oral arguments that are clear, precise, and persuasive. His exceptional knowledge and experience, honed at the highest levels of the judicial and executive branches, enables him to provide deeply informed and incisive guidance.
Prior to his position at the DOJ, Michael worked at another leading law firm in Washington, D.C., handling high-stakes appellate matters in federal and state courts. He also represented clients before administrative agencies and litigated challenges to agency action before federal courts of appeals. Michael graduated first in his class from the University of Michigan Law School, where he received the Henry M. Bates Award—the law school’s highest honor. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona.
Michael is an active member of his community. He regularly volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America, which honored him in 2022 with the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. Michael has also coached youth tennis and soccer.
