Ryder practises complex litigation and dispute resolution encompassing corporate-commercial disputes, securities, tax, competition, defamation and class action litigation. He has extensive courtroom experience, having appeared at every level of court in Ontario, as well as the Court of Queen's Bench in New Brunswick, the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Tax Court of Canada as well as many administrative tribunals including the Competition Tribunal, the Ontario Securities Commission and the Ontario Municipal Board.

  • HO v. A, B and C - Arbitration of disputes under easement and right-of-way agreements between governmental authorities and energy pipeline companies
  • Counsel to leading member of the petroleum industry in connection with land expropriation claim before the Ontario Municipal Board
  • Counsel to Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation defending C$500-million claim by members of a joint venture involved in the design and construction of the Windsor Energy Centre

    • Counsel to a Fortune 50 company in a six-week transfer pricing trial
    • Counsel to a tobacco manufacturer in a trial involving challenges to duties imposed under the Excise Act
    • Counsel to a health-care company in a trial involving a challenge to multimillion-dollar payments under the Canada Pension Plan and the Unemployment Insurance Act

      Competition Litigation

      • Counsel to United Continental holdings Inc. in relation to the Competition Bureau's challenge of the existing and proposed alliance agreements between united Continental Airlines and Air Canada under the civil merger and competition collaboration provisions of the Competition Act, currently before the Competition Tribunal
      • Counsel to auto-parts manufacturer defending class action in respect of alleged collusion with respect to the sale of automotive parts
      • Counsel to ISP defending civil claim of misleading advertising under Competition Act

        Constitutional Litigation

        • Counsel in several leading freedom of expression cases before the Supreme Court of Canada on freedom of expressions issues and issues relating to privacy and freedom of information
