Allan draws on his legal acumen and real-world experience as an engineer for top-tier companies to draft and successfully prosecute patent applications for innovative electrical, electronic and computer-related inventions in Canada and around the world. With twenty years of experience, he has spearheaded more than 200 originating patent applications and is often sought out by Ottawa-based and top global innovators to safeguard their IP interests. In addition, his drafting and patenting of technology contributed to one of the largest technology deals in Canadian history.
Allan excels in offering strategic advice on IP portfolio development, management and utilization. His track record includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications for a range of leading technologies, such as communications, semiconductors, memory systems, optical systems, software and business methods.
Allan has leveraged his IP expertise and knowledge to the benefit of colleagues across the IP industry. Over his career with Smart & Biggar, he has served in various leadership roles, including as a member of the former executive committee, as past head of the electrical, electronic engineering and computer sciences practice in Ottawa and as past head of the operations sub-committee for the firm’s patent practice. Allan also developed and previously co-ordinated the firm’s in-house patent agents training program, which is at the forefront of establishing the next generation of exceptional IP professionals.
Prior to joining Smart & Biggar, Allan gained valuable industry experience as an engineer at Lockheed Canada, Bell Northern Research and Prior Data Sciences, where he was software development team leader on the Radarsat II simulator project. His industry experience continues to inform his practice, providing practical insights to his clients.
