Since 1999, Kenya S. Woodruff has dedicated her legal career to representing and guiding hospitals, physicians and other health care providers aimed at improving the overall performance of their clinical operations, ensuring state and federal regulatory compliance is met.
Currently a partner at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, Woodruff has gained experience serving as deputy general counsel at the Parkland Health & Hospital System, always approaching operational legal issues from the client's perspective. Recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® since 2019, Woodruff is currently being honored as “Lawyer of the Year” for Health Care Law in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for 2024.
Of her legal career and recent recognition, Woodruff stated: “Amongst the various public and private entities and providers that I represent are hospital districts. Prior to coming back to private practice, I was deputy general counsel for a hospital district, and now I represent several of the largest hospital districts in the state. I have supported various regulatory, contracting and governmental entity compliance matters for them, and it is a privilege to work with entities that are such a vital part of the health care safety net system. This, in part, I feel is the credit of my legal success and current recognition.
“The variety and complexity of my daily work is challenging and engaging. Also, knowing that my work is a key piece in ensuring access to quality health care for those across the state adds another level of significance and importance to even the most basic assignment. The most challenging aspect of health care law is the high degree of regulation for the entities and individuals involved in the industry. Health care, being so central to our lives, state, local and federal governments, are focused on legislating and auditing the industry to protect patients and consumers. Our role is to help ensure that these activities are done in a way that properly supports the ultimate goal of ensuring access to quality health care.”
Garnering nearly 30 years of legal experience, Woodruff also serves as National Chair of Katten’s Health Care Practice Group, a role she assumed earlier this year. In addition to her in-housework, Woodruff previously served as assistant general counsel for a national radiology services company.
With a knack for providing strategic advice to many different areas of the health care industry, Woodruff continually works to show up for her client. Whether it’s a physician group currently in negotiations with a hospital system or a care company facing an ongoing internal investigation, Woodruff’s legal experience gives her valuable edge in terms of perspective.
“I really enjoy working with smart attorneys who are observant and can appropriately tailor their approach and style to be effective in various situations,” concluded Woodruff.
