Zantac’s Lawsuit | Pain Relievers Causing Pain, Isn’t it Ironic?

Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim, two of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies are
the main manufacturers of Zantac, a medicine used by millions of Americans to deal with
heartburn, otherwise known as acid reflux. Both companies face class action lawsuits after a study showed the medication contained a carcinogenic contaminant, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). The levels of NDMA have been labeled as “low” yet they are still several thousand times higher what is deemed safe.

A matter of fact, the FDA’s advisory is not the first to report this contaminant’s link to cancer.
NDMA has been classified as a B2 carcinogen that has showed to cause development of tumors in the liver and kidney, as reported by the EPA. Moreover, the World Health Organization points out that NDMA is a “potent carcinogen” and that their studies support the assumption that NDMA can cause gastric and colorectal cancer. In the report filed to the FDA by Valisure (the report that started the current investigation) it is noted that ranitidine has NDMA in quantities over 3,000,000 ng per tablet. The daily intake limit established by the FDA stands at a mere 96 ng. This means that the amount of NDMA found in Zantac is over 30,000 times the safe amount.

The Fight Begins

The first class action lawsuit was filed in California arguing that both Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals deceived customers by hiding the NDMA presence in ranitidine, and that both companies “knew or had a reason to know the dangers consumers were exposed to.” As various individual lawsuits have been filed in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Florida, as well as some nationwide class actions in New Jersey and Connecticut, many stores have voluntarily pulled Zantac off their shelves. Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid have all halted its distribution.

Making Things Right

Cases such as these are just being filed so now is the time to act if you, a loved one, or a friend has been affected. Anyone that has been consuming Zantac and developed liver cancer, kidney cancer, gastric cancer or colorectal cancer should consider joining or filing a lawsuit to receive compensation. Financial compensation may be awarded to cover medical expenses, make up for the physical pain, wage loss, loss of diminished earning capacity, or a spouse’s loss of companionship or consultation.
