Cormac completed BA, BA(Hons) and LLB degrees at the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu Natal), and in 1986 he was employed as a part-time lecturer in the Law Faculty. Between 1987 and 1989 he was a candidate attorney and then assistant attorney in the Maritime and International Law Department of Shepstone & Wylie in Durban (being admitted as an attorney in January 1989). From 1990 to 1993 he worked for Maitland & Co. (a partnership of international legal consultants specialising in international corporate and tax matters) initially in Luxembourg and then in London.
While in London he completed an LLM (environmental law) at Kings College, University of London. In 1993 he founded EnAct International, an international governance consultancy based in London, and was managing director until his return to South Africa. During that period EnAct lawyers worked in more than 40 countries, mainly as part of World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization or European Commission teams.
Cormac returned to South Africa in late 1999 to take up a partnership in the specialist environmental law firm that he had helped found (originally Winstanley Attorneys and now Cullinan & Associates Inc.), and to manage the South African office of EnAct International.
