Esi Codjoe provides pragmatic and solutions focused legal advice to employers and employees, in both non-unionized and unionized private and public sector workplaces. That work includes assisting regulated professional organizations and regulated professionals with their unique employment, regulatory and governance needs.
Esi conducts workplace investigations, reviews, and assessments for both large and small employers. Her experience as a former adjudicator, including as a Vice Chair at the Human Rights Tribunal is particularly relevant to her investigation, review, and assessment work. She has extensive experience questioning witnesses, assessing evidence, and crafting written findings.
She is an experienced mediator and conducts mediations of workplace disputes. Her dispute resolution practice also includes coaching and facilitation work, such as coaching employees to resolve workplace conflicts.
Esi has expertise in teaching and training including in the areas of equity diversity and inclusion (“EDI”) and respect in the workplace. She provides tailored training to address each client’s unique needs. Esi taught employment law and labour relations at George Brown College and Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). She frequently assists School Boards and Universities.
In 2018 Esi was named as one of Canadian Lawyer Magazine’s Top 25 lawyers, and in 2019 Lexpert named her as a Change Agent in Law. The Ontario Bar Association gave her the 2020 Joel Kuchar award for Professionalism and Civility.
Esi is committed to volunteerism, her activities include acting as the Toronto Representative on the Ontario Bar Association’s Board of Directors, Secretary of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, and as a board member at Family Services Toronto.
