John Gurr has a commercial practice, with a particular focus on major infrastructure, resources and construction projects, both locally and internationally. He is recognised in the Australian Financial Review's Best Lawyers for construction/infrastructure and has for the past five years been recognised in Doyle’s Guide as a pre-eminent or leading construction barrister.
John has appeared as counsel in significant domestic and international commercial arbitrations, both ad hoc and under the auspices of the ICC, LCIA and IAMA, including arbitrations seated in London, Singapore and most Australian capitals. He is regularly briefed in commercial matters in the superior courts, including industrial disputes in the construction and engineering sector.
John has acted and advised on disputes in relation to numerous large-scale construction, engineering and infrastructure projects across a range of sectors, including:
- LNG: Ichthys LNG Project; Pluto LNG Project; QCLNG Pipeline.
- Process plants: Neerabup Gas Fired Power Station (Perth); Jebel Ali Refinery (Dubai); Roma Hub Compressor Station (Queensland); Minerva Gas Plant and shore crossing (Port Campbell); Maryvale Paper Mill; Mindarie Resource Recovery Facility (Perth).
- Civil: Melbourne Metro Tunnel & Stations PPP; Mortlake Power Station; Melbourne-Sydney rail corridor.
- Construction: Rialto Tower Regeneration Project; New Royal Adelaide Hospital; Pentridge Redevelopment Project; Bankwest Tower (Perth); Epworth Eastern Hospital; Southern Star Observation Wheel.
Before coming to the Bar, John worked in the construction and engineering practice group at Deacons (now Norton Rose Fulbright) in Melbourne and Hong Kong.
