Kalandra N. Wheeler is a Senior Trial Attorney with the Houston office of Wiley Wheeler, P.C. In 2018, Ms. Wheeler became Board Certified in the area of labor and employment law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Less than 10% of the attorneys in Texas hold this certification.
Ms. Wheeler has nearly 20 years of experience representing individuals in difficult situations. She has dedicated her career to the pursuit of justice and the protection of individual rights and interests.
Ms. Wheeler represents employees in various disputes and negotiations with employers. She has negotiated terms and conditions of employment to resolve internal disputes between her clients and their employers. She has negotiated severance agreements on behalf of her clients. Ms. Wheeler has represented employees in legal claims, including but not limited to those, under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (i.e., discrimination claims based on race, color, national origin, sex, and religion), the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. Ms. Wheeler has represented employees in wage and hour disputes under the Fair Labor Standards Act (e.g., failure to pay overtime or unlawful retaliation for demanding proper pay) and disputes falling under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
Ms. Wheeler's representation includes attempting to negotiate fair and reasonable resolutions for her clients when possible. She knows that although she has chosen the work of being an attorney, most clients wish to avoid litigation and move on with their lives. However, where appropriate and necessary, her representation also includes pursuing employee claims through administrative agencies, courts, or arbitration.
Ms. Wheeler believes that successful representation of clients also requires the ability to provide thoughtful counsel. When meeting a potential client for the first time, Ms. Wheeler aims to provide a listening ear and honest assessment. She hopes to provide each individual with the information needed to understand their options, so that they are able to make informed decisions for themselves and their families. Even in instances where the law may fail to protect an employee, she hopes that people walk away from any meeting with her armed with more knowledge than they had coming in.
Over the years, Ms. Wheeler has been recognized by her peers and the legal community. She was voted by her peers to Fort Worth Magazine’s 2013 Top Attorney list. Then, each year from 2017 through 2019, she was named a Rising Star on Thomson Reuters' Super Lawyers list in the area of labor and employment law. Now, each year since 2020, she has been named on its Super Lawyers list. Ms. Wheeler is honored to also be included here on the Best Lawyers list.
