Family Law Mediation
Life events that involve our families are often the most difficult to meet. Since 1998 Kim Johnson has helped people struggling with the deconstruction and reconstruction of their concept of “family” due to separation, divorce, custody disputes, and estate matters.
Whether the problem is a straightforward Will or Agreement, or a complex contested divorce involving business assets, pensions, or high conflict people, her goal in every case is to find timely and practical answers to difficult and often emotional problems. Known for her straightforward and empowering explanations of legal processes and terminology, Kim ensures that her clients understand all of their options before making clear recommendations.
Through her experience as a trial lawyer, Kim has learned that the courtroom is often the worst place to resolve family related problems. To help families avoid litigation whenever possible, Kim has become a dispute resolution specialist, pursuing extensive training in a variety of mediation styles, as well as collaborative law and arbitration. She has instructed and coached dispute resolution techniques in a variety of settings. She has also completed extensive research into the unique needs of families in high conflict matters, and can design a dispute resolution process suitable for any family wishing to avoid the courtroom.
For those times when litigation is the only way to bring an end to conflict, Kim is experienced and at ease in the courtroom, having appeared regularly in courtrooms throughout the province, and in the Supreme Court (Family Division). Kim has represented clients at both the trial and appellate level in Nova Scotia, and she has acted as an expert in international divorces, explaining our family law system to judges in Japan, Qatar and the United States.
Every family related legal problem deserves a solution as unique as the family itself. Kim’s knowledge and experience in a variety of processes affords her clients the best opportunity for creative, unique and timely resolutions.
