Markus Figgen

Markus studied Law and Economics at the Universities of Marburg, Gießen, Bonn and Speyer and has practiced as a lawyer since 1994. Before co-founding the Cologne and Brussels offices of avocado rechtsanwälte as partner in 2000, he had already been a partner for a number of years in a reputable public law oriented law firm in Cologne.

His practice includes the provision of legal advice to and representation of waste management enterprises as well as enterprises from the manufacturing industry regarding all aspects of environmental law - also relating to aspects of criminal law, administrative offences law - and substantive contract law. Markus has also gained considerable experience in the legal advice and representation of contracting authorities and tenderers in privatisation projects and in procurement by tender proceedings, including the handling of anti-trust and state aids related issues. His activity furthermore focuses on advising waste management enterprises as well as enterprises from the manufacturing industry on all compliance-relevant issues, in particular on the implementation of effective compliance management systems as well as on the performance of comprehensive risk analyses. Moreover, Markus has represented enterprises from the waste management as well as the logistics and transport branches in various complaint procedures before the EU-Commission.

In addition to his practice as a lawyer, Markus Figgen is co-editor of the German legal journal on public procurement law VergabeFokus which is published by the Federal Gazette publishing house. Moreover, he has published numerous papers on national and international environmental law as well as public procurement law (e. g. as author of the German legal journal on procurement law Vergabepraxis & -recht ("VPR").
