Anthony Insogna, Jones Day’s IP Practice Leader and San Diego’s 2021 “Lawyer of the Year” in Litigation - Intellectual Property, is a pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent attorney who has nearly 30 years of experience. He has represented some of the world’s most successful pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to enforce and defend patents in complex high-stakes matters, drive cutting-edge patent portfolio strategies, and conduct multifaceted due diligence involving clinical candidates and FDA-approved products.
“I am quite proud to be able to say that I have had the privilege to devise patent strategies that have protected numerous multimillion and several multibillion-dollar drugs and have been successfully tested in litigation as well as M&A transactions,” he said.
Many rely on pharmaceutical products to ease their daily life. With the importance of these products, it’s no wonder why Insogna finds this area of law rewarding.
“My practice focuses on life-sciences companies whose pharmaceutical products and/or therapies improve our health and, in many cases, save lives,” Insogna explained. “To be a part of that is incredibly fulfilling. To assist the companies in making their investment and furthering their research and development of these life-saving medicines is key to what drives my commitment to this work."
But with many other jobs, the ever-changing technological advancements can make it difficult.
“Perhaps the most challenging part of my field of law is to keep on top of, if not ahead of, others with respect to new cutting-edge technologies that are changing the global economy and the way we live,” he said. “Applying and adapting to the different laws around the world in an ever-evolving, global, fast-paced evolution of technology and patent landscapes is interesting, to say the least.”
With his years of experience, there are three qualities that Insogna believes makes a great attorney in Litigation – Intellectual Property: teamwork, civility in litigation, and perseverance.
“Each is critical,” he said. “You simply can never give up.”
