Chris Richter— Montréal’s 2020 “Lawyer of the Year” Honoree in Alternative Dispute Resolution—is a unique and adventurous member of three teams: his peers, his colleagues, and his family. Upon receiving this award from his peers in the small but distinguished group of arbitration attorneys, he said it was “very gratifying to receive their recognition.”
The opportunity to work at Torys LLP each day has afforded Richter rewarding experiences and the ability to tackle more ambitious challenges. “For me, it has meant the opportunity to work with increased confidence on domestic and transnational disputes that require the highest levels of subject-matter expertise. I can draw on partners who are leading lawyers in fields like corporate governance, M&A, finance, commercial contracts, securities, real estate, and more. The lawyers here love their work and are always ready to help by providing their particular expertise.”
When Richter leaves the office, he comes home to his family—who he adores. Each summer and winter provide the freedom to get outdoors and experience the beauty of nature. “In the summer, my favourite activity is canoeing. I take my family on a canoe-camping trip every summer, which is a source of great fun together and some good stories,” Richter detailed. “In the winter, we are a downhill-skiing family.”
One of the real rewards in Richter’s life is found giving back to a local hospital. “My wife and I are great supporters of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation, which provides outstanding care to sick kids from across Eastern Canada regardless of their background or circumstances,” Richter explained. “We regularly assist them with events and initiatives to raise their profile and encourage giving. We’ve been privileged to meet many wonderful families through these events.”
